It is no secret that being a long haul truck driver is hard on your body. The fact that the job requires you to sit, strapped to your seat for hours on end is just the beginning. Add in the stresses and pressures of meeting deadlines and the fact that the most abundant and affordable foods available on the go tend to be the least healthy options it's easy to see how drivers are highly susceptible to obesity and other heath issues.
In fact, according to studies done by the CDC, 70% of long-haul truck drivers are obese. Unfortunately, when it comes to health issues, obesity is just the bottom of the pyramid. Along with obesity comes increased risk for many issues such as:
- Heart Disease
These problems and more can ultimately cause you to lose your CDL and subsequently your career. But even more than that, they can also be life-threatening.
Though it is a challenge to find ways to stay healthy out on the road, many drivers and organizations are taking action to help drivers overcome the obstacles. A few things you can start doing right away:
- Eat healthy foods and smaller portions sizes.
- Drink more water
- Be physically active
- Track your weight and body mass
