Driver Spotlight: Nathan Hughes

Born in Rockford, Illinois, Nathan now lives in DeKalb, Illinois with his wife Valerie who works as an operating room technician. They have two kids at home, Sid (13) and Tali (10) as well as an adult daughter, Amy, son-in-law, Justin, and one grandson, Carson. Also at home, reside other important family members: three cats – Marble, Dakota, and Furball along with Bruno the dog. Before entering the transportation world, Nathan was an aircraft mechanic in the US Air Force and lived all across the country in Washington, New Jersey, and Florida.

His favorite restaurant is Buffalo Wild Wings where he orders the wings, of course! Classic Rock is his preferred style of music. Interestingly Nathan’s late father-in-law, Bill Dees, was a famous singer/songwriter composing songs such as Pretty Women, sang by Roy Orbison. His favorite treat would be the Pumpkin Pie Blizzard from Dairy Queen but, as Nathan points out, it’s only available in October and November! His popular vacation choice would be Jacksonville, Florida where his sister has lived for 40 years. He really likes the area and the weather and is now an avid Jaguars fan attending many home games during his visits. Upon retirement, Nathan hopes to run his own business in the transportation industry.

Nathan has been with Nussbaum for two years, but has been driving for over 10 years. At a previous employer Nathan formed the following motto, “Always do your job, take care of the equipment, and avoid complaining.” From this work ethic, he strives to be the go-to guy, not just a get-by guy. Unfortunately, Nathan cites that the biggest change he has seen in the transportation industry is the decrease in professional image displayed by many truck drivers.

While Nathan loves his job, his true passion is animal rescue! Nathan’s pets are members of the family. Being in the Air Force made it difficult to own pets, so now that he is able to Nathan enjoys all of his pets. In fact, he proudly boasts that he may very well become the “Crazy Old Cat Man.” On the weekends he volunteers at the Tails Humane Society where he walks dogs and brushes cats. He is also a huge advocate of the Rover Rescue foster-based rescue group. It rescues many dogs from high-kill shelters and places them with foster families until a permanent home can be found. Nathan often volunteers his time to sit with the foster dogs at local pet shops where they are available for adoption. He encourages everyone to visit both organizations and
