As we embrace this Christmas Season, what do you find more fulfilling, giving or receiving? If we were honest, most of us would say that we like receiving just as much as giving. Receiving a gift is great, but if we’re honest with ourselves, eventually, they leave us feeling, well you know, kind of empty. Contrast that to a hug from a friend, a call from a family member, an unexpected visit from someone we haven’t seen for a while. Doesn’t it give us a feeling of warmth?
I was visiting my elderly mother recently. At age ninety-two, she has everything she needs; good food, a warm apartment and friends that live nearby. She doesn’t have many years left, but the only gift she desires is the gift of time.
A few days ago, I was speaking with one of our drivers and she said, “Hey I want to thank you.” She went on to say at Thanksgiving she had asked her driver manager to find her a load delivering to New York so she could go back to visit her family, including an aunt, 108 years old, still living in an assisted living facility. She told me that she spent four days with her aunt and it was especially meaningful because shortly after Thanksgiving, her aunt unexpectedly passed away. Had she not been there, she would have missed spending precious time with her.
In the Bible, Acts 20:35, Jesus said, “it is more Blessed to give than receive.” Why did He say that? Jesus knew that physical gifts don’t satisfy. We were created to serve and to give, not only of ourselves but of our substance. And when we do, God places within our hearts a supernatural glow, a warm sense of knowing that we’re giving unselfishly of our time, and of the resources He provides us to others.
Is there someone that you can give the gift of time to this Christmas Season; your father or mother, a sister, a brother, a friend, an aunt, a neighbor?
Looking for a special gift to give this Christmas? Let’s give the gift of our time to others. It is the most precious gift you can give them.
I wish each of you God’s Richest Blessings during this Christmas Season!
